The Run Collective

Before Your Run

  • Tell someone where you are running.

  • Bring your phone.

  • In some cases, you can use your phone’s GPS to share your live location with a friend or a loved one, so they can track you on your run.

  • Run where you know, especially when running in the dark. Save the exploring of new routes for runs in the daylight and ideally with a group.

  • Take a self defense course

  • Leave the headphones at home or at least take one earbud out so you can hear what is happening around you. You can also try bone conducting headphones where the headphones rest outside of your ears and allow you to hear the ambient noise around you.

  • Consider making your Strava or running app profile private and create Privacy Zones to mask the location of your home or places you frequent.

During Your Run

  • Run in well-lit areas when it is dark.

  • Run in groups when possible, especially in the dark.

  • Wear reflective gear when running in the dark.

  • We also do want you to be able to run alone--but when you run alone, be extra aware and careful.

  • Run against traffic--drivers and cyclists are more likely to see you.

  • If you get a bad feeling about a certain area or person, turn the other way. Trust your spidey sense.

  • Vary your routes--break up your routine (on roads / courses you know)

  • Look both ways when crossing the street
