Running as a Spiritual Practice

There are countless benefits to running, including physical fitness and mental health. For many runners, running is a spiritual experience, too. Simran writes about how running unexpectedly changed his life in his new book, The Light We Give. He'll be joined by Qasim Rashid, an accomplished runner, human rights lawyer, and dad-joke teller.

Making Trails Safer for Everyone with PPTC’s Adam Devine and Carmen Cramer

Although we live in a metropolis, we are lucky to have a vast network of trails right near the city to explore and run. While we encourage folks to venture out into the woods and mountains, there are some basic things that you should know before heading out, especially on your own. Carmen Cramer and Adam Devine will be discussing basic trail safety including proper gear, nutrition, navigation, and survival skills, as well as discussing how we can do a better job of making the trails safer and more inclusive for all runners. We'll have 30 minutes at the end for Q&A.

Cyclist & Runner Safety: How Runners and Cyclists Can Better Coexist

Lucia Deng - a member of CRCA/To Be Determined, New York Cycle Club, and runner with Bronx Sole. As a former Board Member of CRCA, Lucia has put on bike races in central park and throughout NYC, and is also a safe streets activist with Transportation Alternatives.

Cullen MacDonald is an amateur road and cyclocross racer for To Be Determined. He tries and fails to run (his knees hurt!) and looks up to everyone he knows who runs regularly.  Cullen cares a lot about pedestrian safety and has luke-warm takes about how fellow non-drivers should be treating each other. You can find some of these opinions on his team's blog (http://tobetermined.cc)

Ben Kessel - a Brooklyn based endurance coach and owner of fitness studio Priority Fitness. He runs and bikes in NYC as a means of training, keeping social, and commuting.

"Break Down Stereotypes & Build Up Women’s Safety"

Stereotypes are deeply rooted in society and reinforced in us at a young age. We have seen too many articles and news reports of attacks on female runners -- coverage which often points responsibility on the victim. Why does society accept that women are to blame for their own safety? What are the underlying stereotypes that lead to cat-calling and even violence? In this workshop, we’ll explore how to make real change in our communities by addressing unfair stereotypes that can lead to violence. We’ll discuss how to start meaningful conversations that bring awareness to this issue. Our partners will talk about shattering stigmas and stereotypes that otherwise hold us back from living safely. Join Despite the Dark and our partners -- Girls on the Run Executive Director Mary Gaertner and lifelong martial artist Brian Kent -- for a conversation to drive change and encourage us to be better, safer run citizens.

The “NOT TODAY” STORY A Conversation with Kelly Herron
"Not Today Motherf@#!er" was the battle cry Kelly Herron screamed on a Sunday afternoon when she experienced every runner's biggest nightmare. Four miles into her marathon training run, she stopped in a park bathroom, where she was brutally assaulted.

Using skills she recently learned in a self-defense class taught by Jordan Giarratano of Fighting Chance Seattle, she fought back and trapped her attacker inside the bathroom until police arrived.
